.37 I could write a whole essay about "could care less" versus "couldn't care less" but the final word is that some people say one, some people say the other, and it's okay. Both are idiomatic, which means that they don't really make literal sense. What's bad is all the wannabe grammar-sticklers who really don't know much about language but like to correct others and sound superior. They need to find something else to care about.

... but "couldn't care less" does make literal sense. Whereas "could care less," in its usual context, makes no sense at all. You can't even write it off as a dialectic thing, like double-negatives. It's not sounding superiour if it's a valid point, whether you agree with it or not.

Both of them could mean "I care a lot" or "I don't care at all or very little." Think about it:

"I couldn't care less about the new status report ... because my caring level is at zero!"

or

"Madam President, your concern over the starving orphans in Africa is ruining your approval rating! Could you please care less about them?"
"But I couldn't care less about them -- it's a very important issue!"

"Hmm, how much do you care about your coffee?"
"I could care less, because I care a lot."

or

"I don't really care about that situation. I mean, I care a little about it, but I could care less because it's not that important to me. In fact, I am caring less about it."

Well, very true, and those meanings are entirely dependent on context. I think the poster's point, and mine, was about when people say "I could care less about..." and then go on to articulate how they don't care even the tiniest bit about something.

I've observed, however, that when people go on and on about something they claim not to care about, they actually do care quite a bit about. ;P
