(Anonymous) 2016-12-22 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)I think, aside from luck, it's mostly just a matter of keeping to yourself and doing your own thing? Generally speaking I just make content (mostly fanfic) for the bits of canon I like, ignore the bits I don't like, try to avoid sticking my nose into active fandom fights, be careful writing meta and only do so rarely because it's riskier than fic, etc. On tumblr, I follow people rather than tags in a fandom, after the initial figuring things out stage, and usually I pick who to follow by writing something for the bits of the canon I enjoy and see who responds favourably. I manually check some tags every so often, just to see what I'm missing, and if there's wank I just ignore it. If the fandom is just too crazy, which hasn't happened to me yet but might, I'll just leave it and enjoy the canon on its own while finding a different fandom to be active in. Mind you, I've been multifandom since I first started, but it works to be able to juggle which fandoms you want to be active in.
Basically just keep it lowkey and ignore most of the shit? It's worked for me so far.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-23 05:27 am (UTC)(link)I guess it depends what you want out of fandom. I enjoy minimal contact -- fic + comments, composed discussions, and fangirling. Yup. Ignore the bits I don't care for/ avoid things of that nature.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-23 02:25 am (UTC)(link)But to answer your concerns, if you really want no drama, small fandoms, (like for video games or comicbooks for example) are the way to go. I'm in a bunch and most of the content is just fanart and memes and it's pretty nice.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-24 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)...and thus proving that everyone has different experiences. The smallish video game fandom I've been in (TRIED to be in) for 4 years now is nastily cliquish and full of batshit.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-23 10:46 am (UTC)(link)If you're a writer or you just want to hang out and do meta, even if someone gets a bug up their ass about you, it won't get any traction.
