I hate boss/employee ships except in a fantasy setting. Dark Lord/servant? I'm in. Lord/butler sort of role? I'm in. King/not king? I'm in. But as soon as it becomes a more real world setting (or even scifi setting) I'm turned off.

I like it sometimes, but often it just feels cheesy and tacked on.

True. But in my fandom, it isn't, mostly because a top dark lord/subordinate dark lord pairing is my OTP so I read a lot of fics entirely centered around them.
