I found the Eladrin being pulled in as a player-race, a non-level adjustment one anyway, to be really confusing as well. Like you I remember them being extraplanar creatures, to me it's like they wanted something 'cooler' than elves, but elves are already cool guys.

I've read through the 5E PHB and I liked what've I've read so far, they've made some changes to the base classes but it still works in a way that I can figure out, oh and there's some more base variation with the elven races when in 3E it was High Elf and you had to figure out what stat bonuses and lvl-adjustment(if any) you needed to apply for other elf-variations. Now you can be a Drow without being 2 levels behind! Which I like(do miss the 120ft darkvision though but can't have it all).
