Re: What's the worst advice you were given as a kid?

When I was in high school we had a speaker, a white woman, come to our school as part of some sort of local anti-gang initiative. The advice basically amounted to 'if a boy asks you to join his gang, just say no and then tell an adult.'

I remember that all of her advice was terrible, and pretty much a surefire way to get your ass beat or worse, and that it was clear that whoever had written her info had zero idea of how gangs actually worked or recruited. And she, a clueless white lady, was giving this speech to a classroom that was 3/4s black and at least ten of the students were either already in a gang or being actively recruited by one.

It was just like all those inspirational movies that came out in the 90s about the 'urban' youths being saved by a tough but caring teacher. Except in real life that's fucking ridiculous.
