I think it's that rpg thingy, where you join a rpg but make an own journal for the character you play so that the characters together form a "blog crew"
with this journal you are only allowed to write things in-character

Those are just called livejournal RPGs.

Blog crews are mini versions of claim communities, like iam_the. The only purpose is for people to "claim" their favourite character and then list it in their userinfo. It's very pointless and there's no RPing involved at all.
