Re: 07
(Anonymous) 2008-04-30 08:18 am (UTC)(link)Not so much. If it's not canon, then it has nothing to do with the source material, which is why I would assume someone would join a fandom to begin with.
What about the authors/creators who actively encourage fanfiction? Or do they not count, and you're just lump summing everyone into 'people who create legitimate things' and 'people who steal from them?'
In that case, feel free to knock yourself out. I wouldn't call it theft (unless someone was trying to sell their product) so much as displaying an utter lack of creativity. If you didn't make it, it's not yours to use. Does no one actively feel uncomfortable using something so personal as another person's creation?
I would hope that everyone understands that a statement that isn't fact is by default an opinion. It was obviously a mistake to come here looking for discussion.
Re: 07
Clearly.
While I can understand the desire to discuss? Your wording screams condescension and disgust, which really doesn't foster discussion. Discussions usually don't involve broad statements of 'truth' stated as opinion, either.
I'll admit to using icons that would probably upset you as well, but I guess that's my 'utter lack of creativity.' LOL.
Re: 07
Jokes aside, derivative fiction is a natural and common part of storytelling. James Joyce's Ulysses is fanfic of Homer. The Once And Future King and Gawain and the Green Knight and every other damn Arthurian tale out there is fanfic of common folk stories... stories which were passed down from person to person, each teller changing and adding details to their liking - oh wait, that sounds like fanfiction again.
People get into fandom because they want to play with 'what ifs' the things that couldn't happen in canon because of author's whim or genre/media constraints or censorship. For certain fandoms - I know for my part in the Kingdom Hearts fandom, I really don't give two shits about canon. Between the Disney and the raging sexism I can't play any of the games without wanting to gag. What I DO enjoy about the games is the pretty and the slash shipping, which is VERY VERY MUCH SO served by the fandom - and Jesus do fanfic writers write better than whoever wrote the script for KH.
Anyway, this is just one example... honestly, at the end of the day, even if you don't understand why people like fandom, that doesn't diminish its value. It just means you don't understand it.
