Soooo...what you're saying is that you only have fucks to give about representation when the person not being represented is you?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-28 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not the OP, but yeah? That's all most people care about. But I bet you don't have a problem with it when it's about race or sexuality.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I mean.

I agree in the sense that I don't think most people care (or think) about representation at all. But I don't think it's true that people who are talking and thinking about representation being good only care about representation for themselves. I think they see it as good in general.

Bet on it if you want. You'd lose our money.

That's what I got from it.

It's not a bad guess but I just feel the need to point out that OP didn't actually say they have whatever they think Newt has. It's possible that this matters more to them for other reasons.

I've seen people suggest that his behavior was typical of an autistic person.

I have too and I can see their point, but I don't know for sure that that's what the OP thinks. People trying to advocate for people with autism often separate it from the category of "mental disorders" which is the phrase used here, so while other people seem to think this is someone with autism taking personal offense, that's not the necessarily impression I get, though it wouldn't surprise me if it was. And even if they agree about the autism, they might not be bothered by the whole thing because they're autistic themselves. They could still be taking offense for someone else's sake.

I'm just wary of assumptions. People are complicated.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-28 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
People who want to separate autism from other mental conditions are just being assholes who regard people with mental conditions as being below them and don't want to admit to sharing commonalities. It is a social status thing.

I'm not supporting that thinking, just saying that it's common among the types that people seem to be thinking the OP is, which makes me wonder.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-28 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there is a character in fiction that someone has not tried to claim is autistic in some way, usually with a claim they are really an asexual too. It gets really tiresome.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-28 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
This. So long as they are charismatic, a "genius" and attractive as well. But they are not projecting, dear me no. They see the character for what he/she IS, NT sheeple.

The point still stands. OP said they 'usually' don't give a crap. Meaning other critiques of lack of representation or erasure in fiction get less than a sideways glance to them, but THIS makes them cranky. So their dog is somewhat in the fight now and they're bothered.

"Soooo...what you're saying is that you only have fucks to give about representation when the person not being represented is you"

... no, they're not saying that. They didn't even say they had anything in common with Newt.

I read this more as they don't care about representation but people "debunking" headcanons for seemingly bigoted reasons bothers them.

Kind of appreciate that, actually. I for one am sick of able bodied people telling me that I should be offended by the word lame.
