Re: Star Wars

As soon as I'm done with the Thrawn trilogy and some of the new canon books, I was eyeing the Jedi Apprentice series. I'm kind of on the fence because I really like Qui-gon and Obi-wan but from what I've heard, I'm not sure I like what they did with the characters in this series. None of it's canon now, which might make it easier as I can treat it as a what-if kind of AU. What are your thoughts on how they handle Qui-gon and Obi-wan?

I don't mind space battles but they're not a selling point for me either. I was bored by the battle on the beach. The one in space was fine but predictable. I've heard excellent things about the Rogue One novelization though.

I really like Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan's relationship, which makes it all the more painful to watch them have problems and better to watch them get past those problems. I disagree with how Qui-Gon decides to handle some things but I understand it and it can make for some compelling drama.

What did you hear about them that makes you wary?

The setup of Yoda letting Obi-wan wash out for Qui-gon's sake. Even if it worked out, that sounds super douchey. Plus, Obi-wan sounded angrier than I would've anticipated. And, I'm not sure I like the whole thing with Qui-gon's fallen apprentice completely throwing Qui-gon off his game and Obi-wan bearing the brunt of it. Qui-gon sounds like a terrible master and it's all about healing him, and Obi-wan's needs are kind of pushed to the side. Like, I liked that Qui-gon had his shit together in the films. Obi-wan and Qui-gon seemed to compliment each other very well. The setup of the books sounded like it would make me hate one of them.

I agree on that fallen apprentice thing. That bugged me for exactly the reason you're saying. There are definitely some issues with Qui-Gon needing to be healed and it not really being fair to Obi-Wan. But overall I really like them. Those parts didn't ruin it for me because there's more to it, even if there were times I was shaking my head at Qui-Gon going "what are you doing?" That element has pretty much been taken care of by the books I'm on now. The fallen apprentice thing didn't last as long as I expected.

How would you rate the overall relationship between Qui-gon and Obi-wan? Like, how often is Qui-gon being stupid? I'm just trying to gauge if I should give these a try since their relationship is so important to me.

I'm afraid there might be too much of Qui-Gon needing to get his shit together for you. Though if you don't mind jumping into the middle of a series, they're past the problems caused by his last apprentice after the eighth book.

Okay, thank you! I still have a bunch of stuff to read first but these look like easy-reads to I might give them a go. :)
