In my experience, with the exception of a few super bubbly extroverts and people who make lots of friends but only through their partners, the determining factor in whether people I know have lots of friends as adults is whether they stayed where they went to school (high school, college, whatever) and enough of their school friends stayed and they all remained friends. Otherwise, unless you are part of a couple or you luck into finding a really outgoing bff or cracking into a ready-made circle of friends, you are in for an uphill slog.
