Are you old?

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
And at what age do you consider someone to be old?

I'm 27, and I don't feel old, in general. Being around younger people doesn't make me feel old, it just makes me feel like an adult around younger people.

So I'm always a bit surprised when someone goes on about being "old" online, and I find out that they're around my age, or sometimes even younger. If someone online says they're old, I tend to assume that they're over 35 at least. In real life, I don't think of people as old unless they're over 70 or look like an old man/woman.

I've begun to feel old. I just turned 37. I know I'm not "old" really because that's like 70 or something, but this is the first birthday where it's really felt aged.

15 years older than me is where the borderline of old starts.

I started feeling old when I turned twenty and realized I wasn't a teenager anymore. I'm almost thirty, but now I only feel old when I talk to kids and mention something they have no concept of (like not having wi-fi). When I think of an old person, they're in their sixties and have gray hair.

I don't know... 60?

20 is young adult. 30 is adult. 40 and 50 are middle aged, if we're making that distinction. 60 is nearing senior citizen status.

I don't feel old at all, and I get taken for a lot younger than I am, but I feel like I'm at an age where that's actually an indication that I'm coming across as immature or developmentally stunted or something. (I'm 38.)

Like, holy shit, I'm almost 40, I have to admit to myself that am no longer young! But I feel, and probably act, like I'm 25, and lbr, there is a phase in life when that 15-year gap between what age you are and what age you seem just makes you look sad. And I'm in it. (You must age out of that phase, because there's nothing sad about an 80-y-o who seems 65.)

I'm nearly 23, but I hang around fandom spaces where people tend to be younger and there's a lot of emphasis on young talent (art centric anime fandom) so I feel old in comparison.

I realize in most places I'm pretty young, though. I just feel old and busted online. f!s is only place online where I'm young.

"Old" is a completely relative term and my definition of it changes all the time.

I'm 31, and I don't feel old.

Well, I didn't until some young whippersnapper on fandom secrets decided to set my age as the mark at which people become Online Old. ;)

Seriously, though, I occasionally feel old around younger fandomers, and it's not just a case of being an adult around kids, because I've been doing that for years. It's the massive culture gap between when I was a Kid On The Internet, and when I became an Adult On The Internet, and now.

I don't feel old, although I am 39 years old now. I guess compared to fandom spaces, I'd be kind of old though.

I'm 30, but I feel at least twenty years older.

I think of 70 as old, since most people are retired by then (if they can be) and you might be eligible for senior citizen discounts. My parents are nearly 70 and my grandparents didn't really decline until they hit 90, so I don't think of 70-year-olds as decrepit-old or anything.

Feeling "old online" amuses me becase when I was first online a lot when I started college in 1998, I was among the youngest of the people I interacted with. There were always "old" people online.

I'm kinda old, age-wise (49) but internally I feel about 18. So...no?

I think online!old is a commentary on a person's perspective of how online culture has changed in the time they have been online. Like things have changed vastly in the last 16 years, but of anything, it's websites like Tumblr and Facebook that make me feel old.

Offline!old is always 5 years ahead of your current age, according to my mother. She's 70, and "old" for her is 75. When she is 75, "old" will be 80.

I'm 32 and only feel old when I'm surrounded by kiddos ages 18 or less.

Sometimes.

(Anonymous) 2016-12-30 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
It's relative, up to a point. As a toddler, everyone more than a few years older is old. As a preteen, everyone older than a teenager is old. As a teenager, everyone older than their late-twenties is old. And so on, and so on. To people under 30, I am old. To people from about 35-50, I am not old. but not I'm not young. To people from about 55-65, I'm younger. To people over 65, I'm still young.
