Yeah. My plan is to try and highlight the things he was good at rather than trying to make him look like he'd be a great fit for the exact same position elsewhere. He loves and suits the field of work... but not the position of manager.

That's really nice of you. It's definitely a good idea to emphasize his positive traits, rather than awkwardly claim he was a better manager than he actually was.

Thanks. It feels weird still. Like recommending him a demotion to somewhere else. It's easy to suggest someone should get a promotion but weird to suggest they go the opposite way...
