34. Oddly, despite that I am active in the HP fandom and have never been involved in any fandom related to the Redwall books (and it's been ages since I read them, though I've been meaning to re-read), I really think that I had a lot more empathy for the majority of his characters than I ever will for the majority of JKR's characters.

I also kind of feel like Sirius' popularity is largely in part of the influence of fandom, given that he has so little 'screen-time' in the actual books. Things like Shoebox Project, and any other fanfiction/fanart out there (I don't like him that much so I don't know what the big fandom things for Sirius would be) create a sense of Sirius that I didn't think was fully realized in the books. If you think about it, he's really barely there. I personally feel like we don't really know him at all in canon, except for his quickly unraveling sanity in books 4 & 5, and we have maybe... what, one scene where we see him as a young man? Two, I guess, in which he is still sane and could potentially inspire some sort of good feeling or attachment in the reader, but since both scenes are provided by Severus Snape, neither of them are at all complimentary to him. So, I get a bit irritated with that kind of thing too, since compared to other major characters in the series we hardly see Sirius at all. You may as well cry over Colin Creevey's death. To me, I thought Sirius' presence was unfulfilled, if that makes sense. I don't think that, as a character, he achieved much - his only importance to the plot is to be important to Harry, but he's killed off before he truly gets to experience or fulfill that, it seemed almost like he was there just as a means for Harry to angst more. While he had the potential to be very interesting, I never felt that there was enough about him in the books that was actually positive for me to care what happened to him. I didn't cry for his death, but I did feel very sorry for Harry in the aftermath of it.

Wow, sorry to ramble.

Isn't fandom supposed to be all about the unrealized potential of canon characters though? Giving them a life they never got to have in canon? Sirius is most notable in Harry's (our PoV character) life as an absence, and that absence may affect us in the way it affects Harry, and we want to fill it in, the way that Harry wants to find every possible scrap of information about his parents' past. It's the fact that they're not there that makes us want more. I just don't see anything wrong with that, or even anything terribly unusual.

And this total stranger thought your ramble was interesting. :)

Oh, I don't find it particularly unusual, either! I find it slightly annoying because I feel people put so much stock in fandom representations of a character who, in my mind, isn't nearly so nice in canon. What I meant was that while JKR cried for Sirius' death, she has more intimate knowledge and understanding of the character than the readers ever do, and it was the first "real" death in the series, as well, so would have been a milestone for her.

But as for the audience's reception of it, I don't think that Sirius' death, as far as loss of character, warranted a particularly intense level of grief as opposed to that of any other characters, if that makes sense. The only notable thing was that it was the first death. My feelings are that, without fandom, the reaction to Sirius' death would not have been nearly so intense, you know what I mean? Fandom made people feel more for the character, and if someone wasn't actively involved in the more Sirius-worshipping side of fandom, I think their general reaction to his death would have been less emotional and they might have found the fandom's response more shocking/irritating.
