37. I read an essay by Laura Mulvey some years ago, and I thought it sucked. I couldn't take this Freudian stuff seriously. Still can't.
That's all so theoretical, out there, and I cannot relate to it in the least. Feminism is great, and gender roles in entertainment media are definitely somethign to keep a critical eye on, but can we please do it without going on about casttration complex and penis envy?

58. He should have died at the end of S1. :/ You are right it's risking to get ridiculous. But S1 death would have been better than S2 death. Which sucks to admit because his fans have started going on my nerves so much I'd really like them to go away.

I don't think it's necessary to agree with the theory, but simply being aware of it and thinking about it can produce very interesting things. Mulvey's first article using psychoanalysis to talk about film is very dense and difficult to understand (we've been discussing it for two weeks in my class and parts are still challenging), but I'm glad I was exposed to it, even if I'm not certain I agree with everything in it.

It was also the first time anyone had used psychoanalysis in application to film, particularly in how the medium affected the audience, which is now a widely-used practice in film review. So, like Freud, I think it's important to be exposed to it, even if you don't necessarily agree with it.

I partly agree!

But I feel a bit overexposed to Freud in particular, while really thinking he was (mostly) full of crap to begin with.

And unrelated to that, I think that when it comes to questions of feminism and gender, and if you are worried that people will think you crazy, nitpicky and the like, I don't think that this psychoanalytical approach is really the best... you know, to get a discussion going, not just among feminists, but among men and women no matter how dedicated they are to this cause.

Yes, Freud is still very popular to quote, and he's very popular to disprove (particularly some of his more radical theories), but before him, psychoanalysis didn't exist, and he did post ideas that we take for granted as truths today. All of his ideas didn't have to be right, but the important thing is that he started something that other people were able to say, "I agree with --% of that, but I'm going to correct the rest of it", and then others did the same with those amended theories. And again, they're all theories, just some are more popularly accepted than others.

As to the second point, I do agree with that; there's a time, place, and audience for such things. And I am aware that what's meaningful for me, and what makes the most sense as a theory for me may not be true for someone else, but that doesn't mean I don't want to share my ideas with others and have a discussion/debate over it. I can't do that with someone when they don't even want to think about it, but dismiss it as me overthinking things. It's their right to do so, but I'm mostly ashamed of how afraid the dismissal made me of bringing it up to anyone else.
