I figured the movie is the photo and the rest of the world is the rest of the room which you know must exist but have to pretend doesn't for the movie to make sense and look good. I may be putting too much thought into this

Nah, I kinda assume the same thing. If so, I do get the op's point! The average horror plot on the modern day has you begging 'damn, just google the answer' or 'literally call the police you have a phone'. Lots of films jump through hoops to avoid these get outs ('wow none of the six of us have service!!! How weird!!') but yeah, it'd just plain be easier for them not to be set now, or at least not in an urban and western setting?

There are plenty of places in the US that don't get good cell phone service. I don't see where this is an issue in a horror movie unless everyone had service in that place earlier and then suddenly don't.

I have a hell of a time getting cell service inside my condo in a large US city. Thank gods for wi-fi calling.
