Thoughts?

Those turds spammed my friend's LJ.

Actually, the pic of Putin spanking Obama was pretty funny, but those sumbitches were getting in the way of my daily cat pics.

I selfishly hope that this attracts more DW traffic.

Did something new happen, or is this just the usual Russian hacking to try to take down LJ?

For those people wondering, LiveJournal DNS lookups now point to servers in Moscow. Discussion and metapost here http://www.metafilter.com/164293/LiveJournal-represents-social-media-without-borders among other places.

The fears that The Russians are going to steal personal info from English blogs is just... total shit. It's Red Menace fear mongering and war agitating. "First the DNC and the votes, now our Livejournals?!?!1"

a) do you really think they give a shit about how many cats you have or what college you go to b) THEY COULD ALREADY GET THAT INFO YOU FUCKING TOOL THEY DIDN'T NEED TO MOVE THE SERVER TO RUSSIA TO ACCESS IT

By all means, back up your LJ on DW. Maybe LJ will close down soon, who knows. But this is only really a big deal if you're Russian. LJ is/was popular hub for lots people, including political dissidents, activists, and even violent agitators. Now those blogs are located on a server in Moscow, rather than in America, so they no longer fall under American free speech protection. This is very bad for them.

Agreed. The big concerns are a crackdown on Russian and Ukranian political blogs, and I wonder whether LGBTQ-friendly journals now fall under the propaganda law. One of the people posting on this has said that when the servers were located in California, the company (or at least database admins) denied legal requests for information that went beyond U.S. law.

idk how much trouble this will be for LGBT blogs. Hopefully it's not an issue, but so many Russians are jumping ship that I think they're very worried. Russian law is really weird and often not applied the way you would expect.

Bingo. I suspect they'll have to return to small print runs of magazines or find another blog site, honestly. Putin has sure not been shy about bringing back the gulag eras, albeit with slight rebranding.

Sigh. Shit is about to get very fucked for activists over there.

Damn, son. This makes me really sad because lj was a huge part of the internet and fandom back in the day (before they shot themselves in the foot and everyone flocked to tumblr). This is really sad.

Also I wonder what would happen to ontd if the site goes down? Would they move to some other journal site?
