Anyone who would find it silly needs to seriously take a look at how media has impacted their own life. No one thinks it's weird if you're emotionally attached to Star Wars, after all. And Star Wars is the diluted vision of thousands of directors, editors, writers, sound and lighting techs, toy manufacturers, corporate interests, etc. GMM is two dudes and half a dozen assistants, almost always responding directly to audience feedback (letters, comments, tweets, gifts, etc.)

And not only is there a much more direct connection between the creators and the audience, we also get to see how the creators evolve over time. We get to see Let's Players get decent recording equipment, shows like GMM get bigger and better sets, and the people grow and change. And all of this is laid bare for the world to see, not hidden behind a tv script.

And that's not even touching on the fact that media you can enjoy with family members can be hard to find! Having an interest in common is really, really important!
