So you know those multi-fandom exchanges where you can request original work? Whenever I get assigned to write original work, I always super get into it and write 10-15k words, which I think is just about acceptable in terms of 'Oh cool, I got a long in-depth story in an exchange'. People who request original work normally leave porn prompts 90% of the time, but porn is not really something I can write so I usually just go my own way, since it's not mandatory to follow prompts left by our recipient.

But how many words is too long for an original piece? My thinking is that since it's for a canon you're not even sure you like in the first place, and it won't contain porn, which you are hoping for, there will be a limit to how long you can tolerate your fic to be. Or is there? I know that if I was looking at it on the other side, I would say you should be happy you even got a writer who was so excited to create for you that they wrote a 15k+ piece. But as the gifter, I'm really worried about writing something my giftee won't want to bother with in the first place :s

tl;dr: How long can an original universe gift-fic with no porn be, before it is reasonable for the giftee to go 'tl;dr no thanks'?

My personal limit would be about 5K words. Like, in all honesty that's even on the upper limits for something I'd want to read that did actually have porn.

I'd be exactly the sort of person hoping for smut, and around 3K words of it. Something I could read in 10 minutes or so at a leisurely pace.

Uh ... uh-oh u_u; Guess I've been kind of lucky with recipients so far, since they always leave comments that makes it clear they did read the whole thing, but I may have to rethink offering original work. Even 10k is a harsh restraint on me when it comes to original.

I'm sure there are people out there wanting to read that much origific. Just...personally if I go into a fic thing hoping for porn and I don't get said porn I'm going to be disappointed and then I'll probably just see the whole thing as a huge slog through something rather than a fun time.

I'd say this is probably true of anyone hoping to get porn in a fic, though. Maybe if you get a porn prompt that you can't fill, then consider trying to keep the word count lower?

Yep, I definitely understand that. It would be the same for me if it was the other way around: a little porn is alright, but if I didn't want it and it was all I got, then I would definitely find it a chore to go through it. Alright, thanks for your answer! Trying to keep it a briefer for a giftee who requests porn sounds like a good compromise.
