If you're over fifteen (or any age, really), reasonably well-adjusted and writing fanfic, I think it's safe to say you do it 'cause it's fun and 'cause it lets you interact and touch base with other people, not because you're trying to make some grand artistic statement about the root of true innovation.
Let's pick on people who draw fanart next, as though it really makes a whit of difference.

The amount of pretentious bursting from that community about how everything should belong to society and that Fan-Fiction is a higher art because you don't get paid for it, and it's just out of true love for the source material, and damn those creators and their mean copyrights. And that Fan-Fiction is an art form to be respected like the classics.
Those people kill my brains. O____O;

Seriously.
The most mind-blowing part is the part where they think people usually get paid for art.
I do think there's a lot of pretentious and masturbatory attitudes floating around, but I think most people know it's for fun, it's for practice, and it's for stretching a particular set of creative muscles. I don't think there's no creativity that goes into it all, by any means. I just think it's a very different kind of creativity than that which goes into creating something wholly of your own conception.
