Veering slightly off-topic, I think a lot of fan's prejudices come out when they respond to fictional characters, and I think that often times that manifests in really odd and vitriolic ways when it's a female fan addressing a female character. They react to female characters with the same sort of sexism that gets trained into most women and they also get very frustrated and angry with characters who are typically feminine, characters who might be a little weak, or characters who are neither and just aren't treated with any kind of respect by their creators. Female fans are vicious with female characters because I think most of us understand that something isn't right with the portrayals of women we're most accustomed to, but if you've never been able to understand or articulate that the problem is not the women but the attitudes of their creators, the characters wind up being scapegoats.

I'm not sure that makes sense, but I do think it's a big part of why sexism is so rampant in fandom even among female fans. It's easy to hate, for example, Sakura for liking boys and having pink hair and being the healer and to hate on her as a character instead of hating on those reoccuring stereotypes that may or may not be hurting that individual character.

Geez, too much talking.

Anyway, if you're not a member already, you might find [livejournal.com profile] feminist_fandom interesting.

I definitely agree. We're trained from an early age to believe that women are the proper targets, the victims, so when we subconsciously pick up on sexist cues in fiction and it upsets us, it's much easier to take it out on the girls than to target the real culprits.

So I do have some sympathy even for the bashers, sometimes...well, except the ones who try to frame it in feminist terms, i.e., "it's because I'm a feminist that I hate so many of these terribly-written female characters! *goes on to use creepy patriarchal assumptions and misogynist language in discussing said characters*" Because augh how do you miss the point so badly D:

I may have to join that community. :)

I know the attitude you're talking about, but I've never met someone who did that and actually referred to themselves as a feminist... or referred to feminists as anything but feminazis and manhaters.

I think it's hard to navigate fandom when you're aware of this stuff, and even harder to deal with female characters. You want to defend them from the bashers and at the same time, you're offended as well. It seriously sucks.

Yeah, I may be conflating "annoying people in fandom" with "the more disturbing hardcore varieties of self-proclaimed feminist bloggers" in that statement. x_x Ugh, you get the attitude everywhere, not just in fandom, I guess. I may have to do a rant sometime on how sexism thrives on building up a model of the Ideal Woman and using it to knock down all other women, and it breaks my heart when I see that attitude sneaking into people who have feminist intentions.

And yeah. Lose-lose situation, really. But it's still worth speaking up about, on the off chance that someone sees and maybe starts to think a little differently, a little more positively, about the subject.
