From what I've seen, the joke is more about "yuri" being the term for f/f slash and not "ugh this would be better with lesbians." Then again it may be different on other parts of the internet.

yeah uh, this? Who in the world literally thought it should have been about lesbians?

Agreed. Although I'd still watch the hell out of a lesbian ice skating show too. Both are valid and entertaining premises!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
I concur!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-02 11:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. If they'd just named all the characters Rostislav instead, this mixup could have been avoided.

Pretty sure they chose Yuri because there aren't that many other names that exist both in Japanese and Russian.

No, yuri genre fans were honest to goodness upset that it wasn't about lesbians. Some of them even said it was queerbaiting to have "Yuri" in the title and be about guys.

I mean, I don't see what's wrong - in principle - about wanting to see more of the things that you like, and being disappointed that something that might have been wasn't

Obviously to call it queerbaiting is dumb but

I am calling bullshit on this claim.

unless you're talking about seriously retarded 14-year-old tumblrinas or something.

"Yuri" isn't even the actual name of the genre in Japan, it'd be GL. Plus Yuri is a word that has lots of meanings, as well as a name, so no one in Japan would ever hear this title and think it might be about lesbians.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
As someone who frequents Japanese sites, I can tell you that 百合 (yuri) is used. Even if the genre name is GL, yuri is still used quite a lot.

I agree with your last point, though, as Yuri is written as ユーリ, not 百合 in the title. Also notice how it's Yuuri, not yuri. So there really shouldn't have been any confusion.

I did see a few angry comments from people who were pissed it wasn't yuri and calling it fujoshi bait. They reminded me of the rabble complaining when Free came out, just not as loud or numerous. Never saw anybody saying it was queerbaiting with the title though. That seems like a whole other level of stupid.

I was thinking either OP is trolling or didn't get the joke.

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not trolling, and I get the joke better than the yuri fans who really didn't seem to know that "Yuri" has more common meanings than "Girl-on-girl anime."

(Anonymous) 2017-01-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
It's a stupid joke that only works in English due to romanization issues, but the difference between yuri the genre and Y(u)uri (the characters the show is named after) is obvious in Japanese.

It wasn't... a joke to a lot of fans. There was a decently sized group of fans that were legitimately pretty pissed about it not being lesbians, and yeah, there were even people saying it was queerbaiting because it was titled 'yuri' without it being yuri (never mind that the way the name and the genre are written in Japanese is completely different so no one but a non-Japanese speaker would mistake the two)

(As someone who generally favors femslash, was hoping that it would be lesbians when Yamamoto announced she was doing a skating anime-- this was before any character designs were even out, but ended up adoring YOI for what it ended up being, I was so embarrassed by the entire fiasco.)
