See: the difference between Japanese people getting pissy that homophobia wasn't even a thing in YoI but Westerners drooling all over it.

It would have to be 100% an entirely different show if it addressed that.

And from what I've read, the Japanese LGBT response to YOI has generally been pretty good. Certainly some people aren't fans, but there's been a lot of positivity toward it and a general thankfulness toward portraying a nuanced, balanced m/m relationship.

That doesn't negate frustration over, once more, homophobia being treated as something that doesn't exist.
