I like their friendship too. I never shipped it, just enjoyed how openly loving they were.
Don't really follow that Frodo can never truly be happy without him though. That kind of talk honestly ruins ships for me, romantic or platonic. Maybe I take it too literally.

That's a good point. By the end of the story, Frodo has been through too much to go back to his old life. He's basically ruined for Middle-earth/the Shire and that's why he needs to go over the Sea to find peace. But I'm sure that having Sam there with him would be a comfort.
