I don't know what series that is, but it sounds like a sweet way to honor her memory.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It's the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind

And... I'm not going to get too far into it, because you're right that it's a sweet thing that OP is doing, but probably the reason that it's a secret is because the series is... controversial, and... not widely beloved in fantasy fandom

Oh shit, I did read the first one of those books, and yeah, it was awful. lol

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
It takes a pretty significant drop in quality after the first couple, so. Yeah.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I recall the first one being a hardly-veiled attack on gun control, with weird uncomfortable heterosexuality as a contrast to perversion, and the guy got into a sexy bdsm relationship with a hot lady and then murdered his brother at the end.

Am I remembering it right? How could it even get worse?

Pushes all those dials to 11, adds objectivism and worse writing

I think objectivism is even in the first one. Or, at least, there are evil straw men communists.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like you can see it once you know to look for it, but it's not completely obvious on the surface.

Like, there's definitely weird political stuff, but nowhere near the level that it would be later in the series and not specifically objectivist yet.

Oh, yes, totally. I just remember a bit that seemed like it was supposed to be communists only it wasn't actually what communists believe and it was just so out there. I think it was a bit where a guy wanted to keep the fruits of his own labor and another character was talking about how he should share it with the wealthy upper class and was selfish for not giving it to them? And, I remember thinking that the author was intending that to be communists but totally didn't have any understanding of what communism is (at least in theory).

What's sad is that the first book is probably the best. The series gets seriously wtf fast.

I remember the first one as being competently-written by-the-numbers fantasy, until whatsisname got conquered by the BDSM priestesses and the author apparently included his fap material in the draft when he submitted it, and I guess nobody noticed?

For me, the worst thing about the book was the secondhand embarrassment.

That is some real dedication to the friend's memory.

Is that the one with the evil chicken thing?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yepperino.

Don't forget the evil pacifists armed only with their hatred of moral clarity.

I think the evil chicken was the only thing I liked in the entire series because it was just so off the wall goofy, and yet utterly serious at the same time. It was only okay in execution, but I loved the concept.

The illo reminded me of the TV version, Legend of the Seeker, which had at least one big fan on here. I wondered if it was The Sword of Truth.

Wow.

Hey, whatever happened to Elaminator? I'm pretty sure I have not seen her around in a while.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Dropping by late, just wanted to say Eliminator is okay - I'm following her on tumblr, and she posts sporadically on there. She had a lot of RL shit going on last year so she stopped coming here for time reasons, I guess.

I'm so sorry for your loss, OP. This sounds like a lovely way to honor her memory, and I hope you can continue to find comfort in something that meant so much to her. I also hope the series/authors you're a fan of can be helpful to you, too.

I'm very sorry for your loss, OP. If it helps you feel closer to her, then more power to you! We all deal with mourning in different ways and I'm sure she would be happy to hear you're reading them.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-05 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
The good intentions are there, but personally I'd never do this because I don't want to associate the dislike and resentment of reading a long, crappy series with the memory of a deceased friend.

That's a sweet way to honour her memory:)
