heeeeh high-five on the Compilation-loathing elitism. I actually do kind of like Zack; I think he's cute. But I think he wouldn't have made much of an impression on anybody if not for Cloud, because Zack-types are a dime a dozen. He's basically a shounen hero.
Cloud's story, however, of trying to rediscover himself and assert his own identity, barreling ahead in spite of the odds and everything his life threw at him... I think that's something different.

A friend of mine, a fellow Compilation-loather, actually says that in the original game he viewed Zack as an antagonist; he was the person Cloud aspired to be so hard that Cloud's own personality was subsumed by him, and Cloud's victory is a victory over Zack, becoming a hero in his own right.
