I always thought it was kind of an ass pull that they brought Maul back in the first place at all.

THAT SAID

I feel like if it was going to be done in canon it should've actually been done in the movies. Picture Ep II: Dooku leaves Geonosis at the end to go meet with Palpatine on Coruscant. Palpatine's like, "good work my apprentice, btw here's my last apprentice. He failed on Naboo but he's got these shiny new legs and he's going to be the general of your Separatist army, have fun!" and it closes with that. Like if Maul had survived I just feel like Palpatine definitely would've still made use of him somehow (and he'd basically have thus ended up being a bit of a test run for a few years down the road when Palpatine has to put Vader back together).

And then yeah, instead of Grievous in Ep III you get Maul and then you get Epic Maul vs Obi-Wan Showdown on Utapau and then Maul dies for realz and all is right with the world.

I like your idea. That would have been a great way to reintegrate Maul, give him a bit more screentime+epic battle and then let him go out.
His character design was so awesome, though. He was one of the cooler ones imo.
