Yeah, that is the biggest problem with canon, is that sudden turnaround. I am okay with the sorceress theory, but I don't think Rinoa would have done it deliberately.

I guess I come from my POV because I spent time reading slash fanfic for a while before I played the game and found Rinoa nowhere near as bad as even the mild versions I'd run across up until then.

I agree - I can actually see her powers doing it subconsciously out of her desire for that relationship she seems to idealise so much and out of the whole apparent necessity for a sorceress to have her knight.

The way Rinoa is vilified in fanfics is pretty ridiculous, absolutely.

...Do either of you know how people with abandonment issues work? Because they actually got the relationship spot-on. It's not got a damn thing to do with powers, it's got everything to do with Squall being severely fucked up and Rinoa being the only one from a healthy enough standpoint to notice.

Lol no, that's not even close to accurate and if you paid any attention to what happens in the game, you'd have noticed. And Rinoa with a healthy standpoint? You mean the chick who thought enlisting mercenaries to support her little rebel group in a coup against her own father was a great idea?

And even if your assessment was accurate, that only makes her insistence to insert her in his life and pressure him into a relationship only more creepy instead of less because that would mean she intentionally manipulated Squall in his fucked up state of mind.

nyart

I'm kinda amused at you jumping directly to "she's intentionally manipulating him" when - Hanlon's Razor! - it's more likely she just noticed something was off and thought her pushing was genuine help. I mean, this here?

You mean the chick who thought enlisting mercenaries to support her little rebel group in a coup against her own father was a great idea?

Yeah, that's a sign of being naive/stupid, not being mentally unhealthy. Come one, no need to overstate things when there's already plenty of existing faults in the character (and game in general).

I'm not jumping to anything. I disagree that she is such a terrible character, but AIRT implied that Rinoa did it all on purpose with the knowledge that Squall was mentally unstable.
If that's so: The way it was written - which was Rinoa being incredibly clingy and ultimately even enlisting Squall's friends to basically help her with her quest of pressuring him into a relationship with her - can, in my opinion, not be read as anything else than intentional manipulation. (Note that I don't agree with AIRT so I don't think it's this bad.)
