What are some of your flashbulb memories?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-06 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Definition for those who don't know.

A flashbulb memory is a highly detailed, exceptionally vivid 'snapshot' of the moment and circumstances in which a piece of surprising and consequential (or emotionally arousing) news was heard.

I got some of the big ones that a lot of people have.

9/11. I remember watching it all day on TV at school. First started watching it in my business and careers class.

Columbine. I remember coming home from school and watching it. I was mad because my grandma would not let me watch cartoons.

And I got some weird ones.

Like, I remember where I was when I found out Heath Ledger died (eating dinner on campus).

Or when I found out Eddie Guerrero died (my sister woke me up to tell me).

Not news, but all of my near death experiences are pretty damn vivid.

Also the entire trip back home before I learned my dad was dead. The entire day, really. I just knew something was terribly wrong that whole car ride, and then I got home to find out that indeed something was terribly wrong.

Yeah, I think mine are similar to yours.

I very vividly remember finding out my grandpa died, and my suicide attempt (which, i guess is in a way a near death experience).

I do have some minor weird ones (like, one from the Colosseum), but a lot of mine do seem to be very linked to high stress or trauma moments.

It might just be a testament to how much I don't pay attention to the news, but I don't really have a lot of news-related ones.

I also remember the first moment I saw my SO like it was yesterday, down to the smell of the old school library... so I guess it's not all stress and trauma at least.

I still remember when Princess Di died. I usually left my TV on at night because I used to sleep much better with some sort of background noise when I was younger, and I remember waking up in the middle of the night and flipping over to see a special report talking about the crash. I distinctly remember thinking that I must have still been dreaming, because it seemed so impossible. I went back to sleep, and when it was still true in the morning, I was really startled.

Huh, me too. I was having a sleepover with a friend, and when we came downstairs in the morning, her mum was reading news on the teletext and going "Guess who's dead?"

Strangely enough, I still remember this as well. We were at the house of someo of my parents' friends and it was on the radio in the morning when we woke up. I was still pretty young and didn't really know much about who she was, but I remember thinking "Oh, wasn't that the person everyone kept gossipping about?".

Every time I try to picture a visual memory, the first thing that comes to mind is a blurry image of a willow tree with a river running beside it, all spotty and impressionist like a Monet painting. I don't think I've ever seen it in real life. (I have a vague guess that it may have come from Disney's Pocahontas, but I have no idea why I would remember that more strongly than anything else.)

Did you do something special the day you saw Pocahantas? All I can think of. If it is from Pocahantas.
