Fanfic Writer's Block

[personal profile] mrs_don_draper 2017-01-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I'm on winter break from college, and I finally have time to write things for fun, but I can't seem to get into it. I really want to write fic, but I can't seem to get into the mood, and the things I've been posting haven't gotten a lot of attention because the fanbase is too small/not very active anymore.

What do you guys do to get out of a fic funk? What do you do when you know who you want to write about, but you don't have any scenarios for them? Or where do you get inspiration for fics in general?

Thanks for the help! :)

I rewatch/reread canon first. Sometimes I read stories about the pairing (if there are any), especially bad ones because that makes me want to do it better. I outline fics and reread my story ideas, and sleep on it - usually the most interesting one is the one I'll start mulling over before I fall asleep.

I feel you about having pairings with no scenarios though. I've trolled through prompt tumblrs and cliche lists and the like, but they usually are pretty modern AU focused or super fluffy and don't apply to my pairings.

YES! All the time! Every prompt blog or comm I go to, I'm like, "Where's the nasty stuff? The dark stuff? The canon divergent/non-AU stuff?"

I think rewatching canon is a good idea though! :)

Absolute self indulgence, but workmanlike insistence on completing some form of that indulgence. What I initially write doesn't matter, so long as I can bring mysef to write it consistently. When I've gotten back to consistent writing, that's when I start thinking about what other people might actually want to read.

Two shots of whiskey. Three if I'm feeling saucy.

No seriously. If I'm stuck because I'm worrying too much about how something will turn out when I'm writing it, alcohol always kills it dead. Then I can just edit in the morning in case I forgot how to English while I was writing lol

Got me through my thesis, I tell you what.

I don't drink though. :/

...Well damn. There goes the end of all my tricks.

It's a shame, because there's no better way to ensure that you stop getting up in your own head about what you're writing and just start writing than shutting off your prefrontal cortex temporarily.

After one drink, I get so tired that I doubt I'd be able to write anything at all. I can count on two hands the number of times I've had a drink. I just don't hold alcohol very well, and I think it tastes awful in nearly every form.

I tend to either pre-write the whole scenario in my head while I lay in the dark trying to sleep, or turn on music that fits the scene and close down most of the tabs that tend to distract me. Rare cases I've needed to take a walk and turn the story or the characters over in my head until dialogue and visuals start coming to mind.

Not to knock herpy's method because I do that, too, but if you don't drink that's a toughie.

I try to write the dumbest fic possible. Just ridiculous and self-indulgent with no intention of showing it to anyone. The crack ship I'd never admit to, the crossover I love and no one else would get, using all of the words and phrases you're never supposed to use in fic.

Also I tend to write down lists of things I'd like to write, but sometimes that gets a little overwhelming.
