I don't think David could carry a romance plot as the doctor. He was fantastic with Donna but when River showed up I hated her and it wasn't until she showed up again with Matt and Peter that I figured out it wasn't River I hated. It was David interacting with her that that made me think I hated her. I freaking LOVE River, actually. She and Matt played off each other so well and it made me realize that it was David I didn't really like in those episodes. I honestly think he isn't strong enough to carry things on his own and he needs a certain type of actor or actress to be good... Catherine Tate obviously brought out the best in him, but Billie and Alex weren't the right fit. It took Matt to make me realize how much I didn't actually like David.

Yeah I think Tennant could only play one note, romantically speaking, so it got old really quickly. He was capable of doing a fantastic number of things as the Doctor but only one thing when you're talking about the Doctor as a romantic lead.

To be fair, David was playing a role where he was supposed to not know who River is at all. She is supposed to already love him, but for him it's their first meeting. Between that and the fact that she was only a cameo for his Doctor, I wouldn't expect them to have a lot of chemistry.

I also don't agree that she was necessarily better with Matt but then the writing for River got really horrible in series 6 so I had trouble appreciating anything River related.
