Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 02:48 am (UTC)(link)Right, you've got the gist of it. The problem is that it seems as if Kubo was just wantonly using images for inspiration and/or direct tracing whether or not they were stock photos. There's this photo too, which is most definitely not a stock photo:

It seems to me as if it's more coincidence than not that there were a bunch of stock photos, mainly because stock websites are obviously a great place to get a bunch of themed images, and less because Kubo was willing to pay all the stock licensing fees. The photo above, the design of Viktor's room (that was changed without a word for the DVD release), and a few other photos like the keychain pic were not available for licensing and yet they were used anyway.
I know all about using stock photos for reference, that's what they're there for after all once you pay the fee, but that's not really the issue. I do think even if she bought the licensing fees that it's lazy as fuck to directly trace the images, which is obvious when you see the overlay comparisons, but that's a separate issue that would be a concern I would have only if she paid the licensing fees, which it seems she did not, considering she's perfectly okay with yanking designs and outright tracing from other photos that aren't able to be licensed.
