Peggy and Steve were great though. Tragic, but great.

That's the only romance in it that I liked, at least in the movies. TV had a bunch that I liked.

seconded.

I didn't think they were great - I cringed during the jealousy scenes, and they were never super compelling to me - but they were marginally more fun than the others when she got old and they never actually happened. That was kind of interesting.

I loved their romance.

I also though Tony/Pepper's romantic arc was well done, even through CA:CW. While it made me sad, it felt realistic.

Plus I liked Thor/Jane in the first Thor movie! I haven't seen the second one in a while, so I couldn't comment, but I did genuinely ship them.

Peggy and Steve were the ones I was gonna stand up for. And Tony and Pepper.

Except for the scene where she shot at him. That was terrible.
Otherwise, absolutely, I loved them.

Is there any romance, ever, in a blockbuster action movie that you or anyone else has thought was good

I was okay with most since they didn't take up much of the story, but Bruce/Natasha desperately needed a better foundation. Or even a solid enough friendship first.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-08 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I really like Pepper, though. I'm really not a Paltrow fan, but I think her Pepper does very well next to Tony. I like Tony (both comics and MCU), but she definitely makes him more likeable.

Honestly, MCU should just quit entirely.

Superhero movies are bad and I hate people enjoying things that are bad.

Yeah, that's pretty much true. Except for Tony/Pepper, who are great. But Bruce/Natasha and Steve/Sharon are sooo awkward... Thor/Jane never really worked...

Eh, no. Tony/Pepper was handled rather well...in THEIR movies. In the Avengers films? They just didn't try.

Agreed 100%.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 12:18 am (UTC)(link)
Steve/ Peggy, Steve/ Bucky, and Scott/ Hope all work. Pepper/ Tony works in everything save for Ultron. Natasha/ Bruce COULD have worked with more development. I'll withhold judgement on Gamora/ Peter until Volume 2.

For me it's just Steve/ Sharon and Thor/ Jane that are total fails.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I think in the early solo movies having romantic interests made sense (with the exception of Jane because that NEVER worked), but now as they are getting more and more characters and are concentrating more heavily on plots that revolve around the Avengers, the romantic subplots don't add anything to the movies.

Like in Civil War you could have cut Sharon Carter completely out of the movie, we didn't need her character at all, and Steve's interest in her felt very underdeveloped.

I've liked Pepper/Tony in every movie, especially the Iron Man trilogy. I mean, the scene where she has to do arc reactor surgery is like the gold standard of showing the audience why they should care about a relationship.

But, ia about all the rest that I can think of. Steve/Peggy never really worked for me (it wasn't bad but it wasn't good), Steve/Sharon is creepy for reasons beyond the replacement goldfish thing (she was spying on him ffs and they've known each other three minutes), Thor/Jane was cute at first, but ultimately got weird when it became an established THING rather than a little fun flirting in Thor 1. And Bruce/Natasha and Vision/Wanda just seemed kind of like some studio exec saying 'welp we need to insert some romance, who isn't already attached?'

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
I agree.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I liked some of the canon romances, but some of the ones I like most are ones that the fandom actively hates and vice versa.

Bruce/Natasha worked for me in a very bittersweet "this could have been great had they each been at a different point in their lives, and had a better handle on their respective issues" way, and I thought it did a great job of highlighting their respective issues. I thought Clint's wife and children were adorable, and love that he's the only Avenger with a semi-normal life. Scott/Hope and what we saw of Maggie/Paxton and Hank/Janet in Ant-Man worked well for me. Stephen Strange/Christine Palmer worked well as exes who still care for each other, but probably won't be getting back together.

But yeah, I agree, overall, the MCU movies don't do a particularly good job with romance.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Can MCU just stop. As in stop. no more movies? No more superhero crap?
