Where do people look for places to rent these days??

What country are you in? If it's the US, just google in your area and contact the apartment directly for a tour.

It depends on where you're from? Craigslist, apartments.com and just plan google to see what you can find.

If you're close to or in the area, just walk around. If you're not close I still recommend going to the place and walking around, when I moved to where I currently am I took a trip, I had an list of places I was going to visit but I also found some on walks around and if an apartment didn't have any availabilities, sometimes they would recommend places close by.

Padmapper is useful!

Also, honestly, just going out at looking for "For Rent" signs is a great way to find deals you might not ordinarily get. A surprising number of landlords don't advertise online.
