Sorry, I was frustrated and I should have been more polite. But I do genuinely have trouble figuring out what you mean by the "'listening to other points of view is problematic' mentality". I think it's generally a problem that we tend to be really, really bad at talking through stuff to do with speech and tolerance but I also am not sure how to respond without a better idea of what specifically you have in mind. What are the kinds of interaction that you think people are criticizing here?

Well, honestly? Exactly that. Someone says something you think might be divisive, suddenly you ask them what the fuck they mean.

Sorry, not OP, I was being sarcastic because I wasn't sure what they were getting at either. I mean, personally, I listen to other peoples' views in order to challenge them.

My parents for instance because of their age and upbringing, still have so backwards racist/homophobic attitudes, but we can have civil discussions about things like why they'd be okay with me being gay as long as I was happy, but it weirds them out to see 'gay people being pushed in media'.

It actually makes me happy when they acknowledge that they know their views are outdated and they're glad I turned out more... I don't like the word tolerant, but it's what they use usually.

Real nice.

What I was getting at was that there's an idea that you shouldn't have to, and in fact, acknowledging other sides means you're playing the devil's advocate. And that there's nothing wrong with jumping on people. Yes, there is.

And the fact that instead of just asking me what I meant, people elected to be snarky about it? That demonstrates what I'm talking about. So thank you.

You're welcome. Glad I could help.

I did ask you what you meant

I did it rudely, out of frustration, for which I'm sorry but I'm also only human. It's not really anything about your views I was just frustrated.
