I'd suggest no matter where you go, finding a walking tour for your first day. This way you'll get a good feel for the city and then have the opportunity to go back to things later. If you plan a week long trip, wherever you go, look at doing day tours outside of the city.

European hotel rooms are generally more expensive and not as big as American ones. They also don't have as many amenities for the same price.

There's also the option to rent an aparment instead. That's what my friends and I did when we went. I don't remember which site we used, though. It wasn't Air'nb.

If we end up going to London, it will be a bit easier because my mother has visited before.
