For a while when we were kids, my sisters and I developed this idea that the toilet had a monster in it that only came out at night. If you had to get up to pee at night, you had to leave the bathroom door wide open, turn the lights on, check the bowl before you sat down, pee really quickly, and then when you flushed the loo you had to leg it as fast as humanly possible because if you weren't safely back in bed before the flush finished the monster would get you.

Needless to say this did NOT make us popular with our parents, for a whole bunch of reasons including noise, screaming, lights on, lack of hand washing, and a string of random hysterics in the middle of the night. There was a whole deadly earnest sit-down-and-talk-it-through episode, and we did eventually let the idea go, but the habit of checking the bowl before peeing at night has lingered. And I admit to sometimes watching until the flush finishes to make sure no monsters come out.

That is actually hilarious, though I feel bad for your parents. Did you also jump from the bed so you couldn't get grabbed, because that was me.

We really emphatically weren't allowed to jump out of the bed, but that was because I nearly dislocated my shoulder trying to do a backflip off my bunkbed once (I forgot to let go of the railing) and our parents put their foot down about jumping off any and all furniture in the house ever. To be fair to them, I'd also jumped down the stairs thinking I could fly at one point and pushed my sister off a dresser thinking she could fly at a different point. Oh, and nearly pulled a bookshelf down on myself trying to climb it like a ladder. I also threw my cousin into a hedge, but to be fair it was my sister who threw a (different) cousin off a (small) cliff (into his father's arms, she wasn't actually trying to kill him).

... In hindsight I'm surprised my parents survived my childhood. I'm surprised I survived my childhood. I should get them a present or something, to apologise.

Oh my god please get them a nice plant. Or some whiskey. I was trouble but I didn't stop being an only child until mom remarried when I was 11, so I was at least manageable.

Yeah, mam had the three of us within three years of each other, and we were basically a pack as kids. A very daredevil, physically active pack, who sometimes have very vicious and very physical fights with each other, but would also gang up on anyone who looked at us funny. We were holy terrors, is what we were. With an extendable pack of cousins for half the year, as well.

I owe my parents so many drinks and/or nice meals, I really do.
