Guys, what is your take rating fic for language? Are you expecting MPAA-strictness, or looser than that? I've got 8-10 instances of swearing in 5k, nothing serious but just the way people talk. In other fandoms I've seen other gen fics with a comparable level of profanity get labeled either G or T.

I lean towards G, because the situations/plot of the story are clearly G, but I don't know if someone would get pissy about the language if it were?

T seems appropriate. If there's language I don't think it should be G, even though I doubt anyone reading fic wouldn't be old enough to handle a little cussin'.

That is a T and make sure to label for swearing so people know you are trying to be adult and edgy and can skip over it.

Yes. Only edgy people swear. You did it, you won the prize.

There are two things angry tween writers do to make a work "adult". They add gore and oddly stilted swearing because they think that is transgressive and defiant. It is good to be able filter those out. Unless the canon is full of profanity -and the joke "COPS" episode does not count- then that adding of it adds nothing except a sense of the writer desperately trying to prove how much of an edgelord they are.

As a writer, I always go by the MPAA rating guidelines just to be safe. So it depends on the swearwords used.

"Mild" swear words like "damn", "hell", and "ass" get PG. Basically, the curses you can use on network broadcast prime time without getting bleeped.

If there's more than one "fuck", it gets bumped from "T" to "R".

Fortunately, I mostly write smut, so the rating on most of my fics is NC-17 anyway. ;p

I don't think anyone is expecting MPAA strictness, especially where swearing is concerned. My sense is that fic rating is based almost exclusively on sex and violence, so if your fic doesn't contain levels of those that would rate above a G or T, then don't rate it higher because it's got swear words. I also wouldn't take any swearing milder than "fuck" into account at all for rating.

tl;dr: if it's got a lot of fucks but no sex or violence, go with T. no fucks at all, G. fucks plus sex and/or violence, T+ based on the sex and violence.

I don't rate for language. Only violence and/or sexual hijinks. I'll say 'Adult/explicit, one scene of detailed death in a warzone', something like that. Language doesn't even ping my radar.

It depends on the language. If it's just things like "Ass" or "Damn" then just go with a K+/PG rating.

If anything stronger is involved, I'd give it a T/PG-13, just to be on the safe side.
