I get the strangeness - my first fandom was opposite xD. It was all murder, rape and existential horror. No one ever written anything marginally happy and if they did, they got run over a lorry. Guessing that some media has a narrow appeal with various tropes so anything outside it registers as 'nope'.

In early 00s, fantasy anime fandoms had a thing for 'modern AUs' - usually school ones. Escaflowne was the one that had another subtype that I ended liking because it was ... 'long term hospital care!' - yes, was the teen who was stuck on a ward :|. Sticking teenagers on a ward and expecting them to behave is ... yeah ... so fics kind of did recreate all the hijinks (at one time - insomniac me, had a room mate that loved snogging all night long so no sleep ... plus deep in closet gay plus having to physically fight her mates who formed a gang and thought every room was theirs. The leader was a girl who was shortest person I met bar myself and she was strong as fuck).

Hm. Comment went off topic. Oops.
