Praise kink can be anything praising. Not just good job, but complimenting them, calling them beautiful, telling them you are proud of them. And yes, it is a thing some people get off on.

And is that how it goes down in the fic? Like... "You got that promotion at work, I'm so proud of you..." followed by porn? Or is it just the praise part that's non-sexual in the context of the fic, but a kink for the reader?

It depends? I read a lot of at least D/s stuff, and usually the praise is in the context of the scene. Either the sub being told they are doing a good job when they obey and are beautiful/perfect/whatever or the dom being told how good they are at domming and how much the sub loves it and them? Praise is generally actually part of the kink and the sex. I can't speak for anyone else, but it definitely makes things hotter to me. I want everyone to be enjoying things and I like everyone talking to each other and praising and just generally being clear about how much they enjoy this and each other.

It's usually praise in a sexual context. Like, people will be fucking, and char A will be telling char B how good and beautiful and amazing they are and how proud they are of them and stuff. It also often intersects with a lot of dom/sub dynamics, where usually the more dom-y character will be praising the more sub-y character - sometimes explicit about what a good little sub they are, sometimes more generally.

It's a thing that works for people, you know?

Kind of. Most of the stories I've seen focus on not the compliments but the vulnerability of the praise receiver who is insecure in some way or isn't used to praise, it's like mild h/c
