At that point it was another situation where books were her only escape since she thought she would be confined to that castle for the rest of her life, an escape that she did love because of her experience with it in the village where she also felt trapped. I shouldn't have said that she didn't love books. What I meant was that there are different ways of appreciating books. The way people talk about her doesn't match the way I view her as appreciating them. She strikes me as someone who loves stories because of the escapist element, and I view that as being different from really loving books, though they often go together.

Probably reads as a backpedal, but whatever. I'm surprised I'm making any sense at all with how tired I am today.

I don't see it as an escape. By that point, it was pretty clear that Beast was giving her her freedom, he just didn't verbalize it. And, as the other anon kept saying, she was doing more socializing with the other denizens of the castle, something she had not done much before. So it reads to me as something she enjoys on top of her dres of adventure.
