lmao mte, it's cool if legit pirate history is something you're interested in but I just wanna read about swashbuckling heroes sailing around being free

I go for the "why not both?" approach myself. I love rogue-ish fictional pirates and I find the history of piracy, particularly during its "Golden Age" to be fascinating.
