I think the more modern version of plucky and freewheeling underdogs starts with the "Pirate" radio stations in the 1960s. Stuffy ass brits imposed a lot of censorship laws, so disc jockeys took to the seas to broadcast from international waters... you know what, just go rent The Boat That Rocked. It pretty much covers it.

The pirate radios fed back into the US scene via the British music artists, and ultimately washed up on the Pirate Bay in liberating music once again from stuffy ass suits on the early internet. Pirates are fun like that.
