Silmarillion
I think that Sauron's original name, Mairon, doesn't just speak to his being admired. I think it speaks to his very nature and one thing that sets him apart from Melkor (at least pre-Numenor). He craves admiration and worship. Fear is okay, but awe and adoration is better. He feeds off of praise and does everything he can to be admired.
