Celebrimbor has such complicated feelings toward his family. He loves them because they are his family. And yet he wants to separate himself from their legacy. And yet he still considers himself a descendant of Feanor. And when he hears negative comments about them, while he agrees with the comments, they still hurt. He wants to fix the damage caused by his family, to make a better legacy.

I think that Sauron's original name, Mairon, doesn't just speak to his being admired. I think it speaks to his very nature and one thing that sets him apart from Melkor (at least pre-Numenor). He craves admiration and worship. Fear is okay, but awe and adoration is better. He feeds off of praise and does everything he can to be admired.
