She did film all her scenes for Episode VIII, IX would be the problem. I can see them handwaving it "Oh the General's off dealing with this" but that's not a great resolution. :/

It's hard, because you want to do justice for the character of Leia, who is one of the most important characters in the universe. But since she's so tied to Carrie Fisher, it's not like you could get away with recasting. I don't really know what the answer is; the story won't feel satisfying if Leia's arc isn't resolved, but you can't really escape the elephant in the room that Carrie's dead, either.

It's probably a good idea to not write Leia-heavy scenes in IX; they can use CGI for brief appearances or holograms. (that'd be a neat throwback to her first appearance too!)

I don't know if they were planning on writing a big arc for her. part of me hopes they were because I love badass older lady general princess Leia, but part of me hopes they weren't so they don't have to change things around a lot and make it awkward.

I've heard that they have to do substantial rewrites for IX, so yes, I'd say she did have a significant role. Hopefully it can be reworked in a way that makes sense. I know that Hunger Games did the best they could, but oh, I really missed Philip Seymour Hoffman in that last film.

That's too bad really. :(

There's also the chance that the character is already being killed off in VIII.

nayrt but if this is the case, I would kind of laugh. After all the urgent speculation, ethical debates, and what - and here Leia was always intended to die next film. heh
