Out of all the many, many things Glee has done badly, I think it handled Cory Monteith's death really well. My biggest worry was that after the tribute episode they would pretend he'd never been there at all, but he came up when he would have been relevant without it feeling overdone or upsetting.

Yes. The episode honoring him was so emotional. Particularly the scene with his mom going through his things alongside Burt and Kurt.

I kind of checked out of Glee around the end of season 3, but I dutifully sat through the next few seasons for the few things I still enjoyed. None of those things were Finn. I cried anyway.

I started watching the show thanks to my sister, and she was the more diehard fan of the two of us. But yeah, I followed it, too, 'cause it was something my sister and I could bond over :).

And the grief among the cast in that episode was genuine, and from what I've heard about Cory Monteith himself, he seemed like a nice guy, so just the knowledge that somebody died so tragically at a young age and whatnot...it's hard not to get caught up in the sadness of that.

It was so hard to watch. It is one of three episodes I've only ever seen once (The other two are the puppet and superhero episodes because they were dumb), and even though I actually have the whole soundtrack for that episode, I never listen to it. I have Lea's album, too, and I never remember to take the song she wrote for him off my iPod which leads to a lot of frantic fumbling to skip it because OUCH.

I only saw a tiny bit of Glee, earlier stuff, but I didn't realize he'd died. What happened to the character; how did they write him out? (spoilers are a-ok, I'm never gonna watch it)

Out of respect for Cory, they specifically left it vague. Cory himself died of a drug overdose, and they wanted the tribute episode to be more about his life than his death. The episode starts with him already dead and the funeral over, and the rest of it is about them all struggling with their feelings and how they should memorialize him.

Makes sense. Sounds like they did it respectfully and with sensitivity, which is important. Wasn't he like 30? :(

He was 31, if I remember correctly, and had just relapsed from rehab. He'd been drinking since he was, I believe, 12. It's just a really sad story all around.
