Since I'm sure I'm one of the people you're talking about: Personal reasons like very bad experiences with potheads, a broken home because of a family member's drug habit, knowing several people who are in a similar situation.

I think the frustration comes from extrapolating those experiences onto everyone else's experience. I'm a light drinker, and while I dislike being around some drunk people and think alcoholism is horrible, I get really frustrated by some peoples' inability to see any middle ground between alcoholism and teetotalism. And I've encountered a surprising number of people who talk like that.

NAYRT - I think you make a very good point. I've known pot junkies who weren't destructive towards others per se, but I mean, they were junkies, you know? But I also know a lot of smart, responsible people who, yeah, smoke pot sometimes. It's not my thing at all, but I'm not against them doing it. Same with drinking. (I actually do drink, but... I only drink on special occasions or if I'm out with friends. I would never come home and pour myself wine for the hell of it. Most people I know do, though, and they're not alcoholics.)

Yeah, I sometimes have a beer when I'm relaxing in the evening. (I don't usually drink wine unless I'm with family; I just like beer better I guess. It's cold and tasty.)

I generally make sure to mention that my massive problem with weed comes from lived personal experience that is in no way funny or cute for me. I also don't tell people not to smoke pot or say every person smoking pot will behave in a bad way.
But it's massively frustrating to be dismissed as hysterical or some sheltered little idiot and have everything you say doubted because "Awww, you little stuck-up moron, weed is so harmless" even though you've seen evidence that a) no it's not, at least not for everyone and b) you already said it's a personal thing.

That's totally fair. I guess I'm confused as to what your "massive problem" is though if you're not against other people doing it. Does that just mean you don't want to do it yourself, or don't like reading about it?

Mostly. I don't like reading about it, especially in fic if it's not in canon, especially if it's characters I like who smoke it. In RL, I remove myself from situations when people start smoking it. I keep my distance from people who are high.
I also usually get seriously pissed off about it when my brother is visiting while very obviously high because I've had bad experiences with this kind of situation.

Oh, yeah, I can understand that (re: your brother). It sounds really frustrating and I'm sorry :(

(not that the rest of it doesn't make sense! I guess I just haven't encountered much pot in fandom)
