I'm researching RL pirates for an original novel, and no, they were not nice people. It must have been truly horrible, having to watch helplessly as your ship was methodically stripped of anything useful, right down to rope and timber and canvas, over a period of a couple of days. Hats off to the Navy for dealing with this awful threat.
