Re: For series when an actor died mid-way

Dumbledore was recast and there was no way around it really at the time (CGI would have been ridiculous and you couldn't write him out)

8 Simple Rules handled John Ritter's death really well.

In Big Bng Theory, the voice of Howard's mom died and they handled her death by having a really nice episode and she died offscreen. Considering she was never shown on screen, it was easier, but I liked the way they handled it.

Recasting Dumbledore was the obvious choice, though. I don't think it was the same dilemma as, say, Carrie Fisher and Princess Leia - mainly because the books existed and had huge popularity before the movies came out, and Dumbledore is honestly a side character and you can't stop the franchise just to replace that actor. Whereas with Carrie, she was Leia from the first time the character hit the public, and while there is outside Star Wars material, she is pretty much tied to the character. It MAY have been possible to recast if Carrie had died years ago and they wanted to bring the character back for the new movies, but since she already starred in one of them, it was pretty much a done deal. Dumbledore though, I don't think it was much of an issue.

Plus, there had only been one HP movie with Richard Harris by the time he died (and I remember some people grumbling they didn't like him in the role) so I don't think he and the character had even really solidified in peoples' minds so much.

Yeah, I honestly didn't care for him in the role. He really did come across as too old. He had a sweet charm, which was great, but I thought Dumbledore would have a little more energy. I wasn't in love with the second actor, either, but he did the job fine.
