Fandom's fascination is probably that it's a nice AU that most people are going to recognize but not a modern AU.

You can do a Dread Pirate Roberts and Buttercup type situation with your OP. Or have a group as a crew. You can kind of apply any general adventure template, where as working as a ship's crew specifically for a country gets into historical research. (Being in SW fandom, everybody creams their pants over smugglers/bounty hunters which are pirates IN SPACE)

For talk like a pirate day, it's fun and silly, recognizable, and doesn't really have any heavy cultural baggage so it's safe. About the only thing I can see as a similar topic would be 'dress/talk like a dinosaur' and then you get into the whole furry thing.
