wrt drug tests, to my knowledge they're really not A Thing here in england, and i'm sure that's the case in other non-US places too. so if the author is from somewhere like that, they may well not know that's a thing and that's why it's not a consideration for them?

(alternatively just. that even if they do know, it's fic and they're not focused on it being 100% real-world-accurate but. yeah my point still stands in at least some cases I'm sure)

I watch a lot of procedurals, so I read a lot of fic about law enforcement and those connected to it, and for someone like that not to think of drug tests or even getting caught seems unrealistic enough to challenge my suspension of disbelief.
